Abstract
Following tooth extraction, a well-described process of wound healing events results in an extensive three dimensional bone resorption of the alveolar ridge that may present a significant problem for later prosthetic reconstruction either with a conventional bridge or an implant-supported crown. For this reason, several techniques and materials have been suggested to preserve ridge dimensions and contour and, thus, to facilitate the construction of a future prosthesis that satisfies aesthetic and functional demands. The aim of this presentation is to critically present and discuss the current literature evaluating the histological and dimensional changes following tooth extraction and the effectiveness of various alveolar ridge preservation techniques on preserving ridge dimensions, promoting new bone formation in post extraction sockets and facilitating implant placement.
