The British Society of Periodontology was founded in 1949 "to promote for the benefit of the public the art and science of Dentistry, and in particular the art and science of Periodontology and in furtherance thereof........, to advance all aspects of Periodontology and to promote improvements in the teaching of the same."

The BSP awards prizes for research into periodontology, both for undergraduate and postgraduate students, on an annual basis.

Meetings are held in the Spring and Autumn of each year. Regional groups have been set up to provide educational meetings and courses for GDPs and periodontists at a number of centres across the UK.

The BSP celebrates its 70th Anniversary in 2019. Much has changed in society, healthcare and dentistry since 1949, and we have progressed to what we believe is an evidence-based, science-driven model of patient management.In keeping with the Society’s traditions, the topics at this meeting range from the use of new technologies for diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery of periodontal treatment, through cost-effectiveness and reasonable expectations of treatment (and what this means for clinician and patient) and the local, systemic and other impacts of some of the daily interventions we use in dentistry and medicine. We will even address whether we are in fact still using 70-year old strategies for the management of complications of the most modern restorative treatments.The Annual General Meeting, Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize and Section meetings will be held on the afternoon preceding the main conference. We hope to address issues related to the future training options for periodontal practitioners in the UK, and the impact and teaching of the Disease Classification derived from the World Workshop and released in 2018, and how this relates to the BSP’s proposals for implementation in the UK in the Practitioners’ Section and Teachers’ Section meetings. All those attending the main conference are welcome to come to these meetings.We hope to have a informative, useful and enjoyable meeting at the Grand Hotel in Brighton in April 2019.

AbstractFollowing tooth extraction, a well-described process of wound healing events results in an extensive three dimensional bone resorption of the alveolar ridge that may present a significant problem for later prosthetic reconstruction either with a conventional bridge or an implant-supported crown. For this reason, several techniques and materials have been suggested to preserve ridge dimensions and contour and, thus, to facilitate the construction of a future prosthesis that satisfies aesthetic and functional demands. The aim of this presentation is to critically present and discuss the current literature evaluating the histological and dimensional changes following tooth extraction and the effectiveness of various alveolar ridge preservation techniques on preserving ridge dimensions, promoting new bone formation in post extraction sockets and facilitating implant placement.AimsTo present the current evidence on the effectiveness of various ridge preservation techniques on preserving ridge dimensions, promoting new bone formation in post extraction sockets and facilitating implant placementObjectives<ol><li>To outline the clinical importance of post extraction alveolar ridge resorption.</li><li>To present the different treatment approaches for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) </li><li>To review the evidence on the effectiveness of ARP on: a) preserving ridge dimensions b) improving implant related outcomes</li></ol>
